It’s a pleasure to finally be able to talk to you. Working with the Academy trainees keeps me busy! Especially since I’m going to take some time off from the adjunct faculty, next month, to help plan the wedding.

A Gift on AwakeningAfternoon sunlight suddenly poured through the bedroom windows, after having been interrupted by clouds. It was raw and barely shaded. As it hit Jim, lying on his stomach on the bed, it made him stir with its warmth on his bare skin.

He half-opened his eyes, groggy from a deep and dreamless sleep, and he looked into the pillow. Blue, he thought. When did I last change the sheets? I could have sworn I put the green set on last.

His alarm clock seemed to be blinking next to the bed, intruding on his sluggish brain. Blinking? he thought. Must have had a power outage in the night. Just as well that I have no clients I need to see today.

This is my original character Windrider (also Windy and Sue), depicted in solo flight without her partner and lover Silverbird. She's from my short story "A Gift on Awakening."

It's the prequel to a longer, episodic tale of winged beings that has long been in preparation, and which I hope to be posting here soon.

I commissioned this portrait from *clayscence (Vanu) after she created a beautiful rendering of the couple in 2010. With their having shown mutual regard, I wanted to see one of them having a moment of sheer ecstatic release when in flight.

Some colors and other details differ from the story (and from the earlier work), but I wanted to include choices from Vanu and me that played to her talents, as I had seen them displayed in her gallery.
