She's been back for about two years, actually, with the mega-tales of The Lightning Saga, Superman and the Legion of Super-Heroes, and Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds, all of them now out in trade volumes.
Yet after her having been nearly absent or traduced and injured when she did appear for 17 years, it's a special pleasure to see her portrayed so well in this return engagement. Kudos to Gary Frank for a compelling redesign of her look.
All six of her limbs, and the intriguing woman who connects them, are worth checking out. Most recently, in a vivid (but brief) visual feast via Adventure Comics issue 4, released last week.
(The Legion is likely to be taking over that title in early 2010, with new writing from Paul Levitz, one of the most talented creators in its more than half-century of stories. Now, that thrills me! It's also a great point for you to consider jumping on.)
You can find out much more about Dawnstar via the summary and links at Wikipedia, one page over there I do keep an eye on. Also try my own Dawnstar page, which has links to commentaries and fan art that I've put on line about this fascinating character.
She's also sneaked, by way of a custom desktop, into my dA scraps gallery! (If you can call soaring in midair "sneaking.")
I've worked slowly over several years to create a far bigger Dawnstar gallery ... yet it's not been easy, partly from an excess of visual riches. Wings do get under artists' skins! (If only I could draw them myself ...)

If you're among the truly fierce "wing-lovers" ...
The new Greek-rooted word for us is pteraphiles. Try my Yahoo! Group of that name. Winged-human(oid) art is shared through a mailing list, accessible through either e-mail or the Web for those who join with a Yahoo! ID. File archives are available, including many winged works featuring comics characters.
As to those winged-art dA clubs ...
Unfortunately, I can no longer encourage joining either =The-Wings-Club or *Wings-Of-Fantasy, as they've added works irregularly, and have too many quirks in their membership policies. They both, however, do have links to superb winged art in their galleries.

Thanks to all those who've visited, responded, watched!
I'd always appreciate a note or comment about one of your own winged creations, visual or literary. If you alert me of such winged art, I guarantee a comment in response. And I'll most likely fave it, as well!
I work slowly and, probably, too deliberately (and with diversions into art and political commentary elsewhere) ... so thanks for the notes of support.
I'm trying to add installments of a story following up on "A Gift on Awakening," that story being meant as a prequel. Two have long existed, two more are in the works, but all need some dramatic correlations.
And as that sparring partner of Life permits, I still hope to post them here soon.
Cheers ~ Steve (Greybird)

It's a beautiful, huge ptera-gallery, folks — take a good look at it, and consider joining.
